Why Physical Activity is a Must-Do for Overwhelmed Men and Women
I’ve recently returned from the UK where as well as connecting with family and friends I had the amazing opportunity to support a client and elite athlete as she competed in a 48 hour run around a 400 meter track. (I know it sounds like a nightmare! And to be honest just supporting her was a challenge in endurance) However, I was inspired by the athletes, one man called Bill who is 77 years old had travelled over from Florida, and two ladies were also in their 70’s and they all just took their time, step by step to reach the finish line. It seems like the older we are the more patience we have for the long distance endurance events.
Now I am not in any way suggesting you should walk or run around a track for two days straight, but exercise is a powerful remedy for many of our worries and stress.
Feeling helpless, anxious, and addicted is an overwhelming challenge that many of us face daily. Depression, anxiety, and addiction can stem from various causes including stress, changes in environment, and trauma. Although these issues may seem inescapable, there is one activity that has proven successful time and time again in helping to relieve these symptoms. Exercise has been found to be an effective way of handling these issues. Here are some reasons why you should start incorporating physical activity into your daily life.
Exercise releases feel-good hormones:
One of the main reasons why exercise is so beneficial is that it releases endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good hormones. Increased levels of endorphins in the body lead to a feeling of happiness, euphoria, and reduced pain sensation. These hormones interact with the brain’s receptors to stimulate positive feelings and, in turn, reduce symptoms of depression.
Exercise helps with anxiety:
Regular exercise is beneficial in managing anxiety. Exercise helps reduce negative thoughts that can lead to anxiety. Exercise can also boost confidence and provide a sense of accomplishment, making it an effective way of dealing with stressors that may be causing anxiety. Studies have shown that people who exercise regularly are less likely to develop anxiety disorders than those who are inactive.
Exercise is a good alternative for addiction:
People who struggle with addiction can greatly benefit from regular exercise. Exercise provides a healthy way of finding peace when we feel overwhelmed. It is an effective distraction from negative thoughts and emotions that lead to substance abuse. Studies have indicated that people who engage in regular physical activity are less likely to relapse than those who are inactive.
Exercise promotes better sleep:
One of the reasons why we feel overwhelmed is due to a lack of sleep. Exercise can help in promoting better sleep quality, leading to better overall mental health. Exercise helps regulate our body’s natural sleep cycle, leading to a more restful night’s sleep. By establishing a regular exercise routine, you can improve the quality of your sleep and your overall mental health. One of my favourite ways of combating jet-lag after overseas travel is to put on my running shoes and go for a gentle jog.
Exercise promotes a sense of community:
Group activities like sports and team games can provide a sense of belonging, leading to improved mental health. In addition to reducing the symptoms of depression and anxiety, exercise can also give a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and social support. By engaging in physical activities, you are more likely to find a sense of belonging, even if you don’t have friends or family nearby.
Exercise is a powerful tool in promoting positive mental health. It can help in managing depression, anxiety, and addiction. Regular exercise can increase the body’s natural endorphins, promote better sleep, provide a sense of belonging, and distract from negative thoughts and emotions that lead to substance abuse. While the thought of exercise may seem daunting initially, establishing a regular exercise routine can be a positive and rewarding experience, leading to better overall mental and physical health.
So get up, get moving, and reap the benefits of exercise today!
