When my children were very young we lived in Goathland in North Yorkshire. The Children’s school had just 30 pupils.
At the same time we owned and operated a very busy fish and chip restaurant in Whitby. in 1991, the first episode of Heartbeat was filmed in our village.
Heartbeat was a drama based in the 1960’s in a fictional village called Aidensfield and particularly focusing on the local Police. Locals were invited to be extras in the show and we took full advantage of the fun as well as being well paid for our time.
I tell you this background because it holds the key to success in business. Over time we got to know the cast and crew and one evening whilst having a drink in the local pub.
Bill Maynard who played ‘Greengrass’ in the show was talking in the bar about fish and chips in Whitby. We overheard the conversation and my husband piped up, “Come and Try our fish and chips!” I could feel my heart beat faster with fear and embarrassment at the time.
However, Bill did come down and loved our fish and chips! So much that he encouraged the cast and crew to use our restaurant. Which led on to the producers and everyone involved using “The Quarterdeck” our restaurant as their preferred eating place for the extras too. This sometimes involved accommodating up to 200 people for lunch.
This was great revenue but it gets even better. Bill Maynard was interviewed by the National newspaper, the Express,
the article hit the newsstands on a Saturday morning. In the article he was recommending our fish and chips to be the best in Yorkshire.
We became so busy not just from people visiting once, but by trying the food and by us living up the
promised reputation of providing fresh produce. We became very successful. We were probably one of the most expensive restaurants too, but we paid a lot for our products and were proud of the service we offered.
Do you understand the key here?
Fear of rejection stops us. I would have missed the opportunity back then. My husband faced up to the challenge and we got the reward. So the message is to get out there and sell your self!
Sometimes having someone to be accountable to makes all the difference to us making that move!
